It is Robert Falcon Scott with his teammates returns from the trip to the south pole. He finally knows, that as a conqueror he has been defeated - at the pole he found a tent with Norwegian flag, a bit of food and a letter from Roald Amundsen inside. His team made it to the pole more than a month earlier.

Broken because of the failure, doomed to a deadly and foot trip through the ices of Antarctica, Scott heads his way back, which is interrupted by a snow storm. Trapped in the tent only 12 kilometres from the coast and safe shelter on the ship, polar explorers wait for death, dying of hunger and freezing cold.

From this scene Nabokov's "Pole" starts - a novel about the last moments of lives of people aware of incoming end, reckoning up their past in the face of death and still able to undertake heroic acts. Johnson, aware that he is another burden to his teammates because of his frost-bitten and putrid feet, chooses lonely death and goes out of the tent to the infinite, white void. Fleming, who is the only member of the team, which possibly could make it to the base and survive, but surely wouldn't be on time back with the rescue team, decides to stay at the side of Scott and delirious in fever Kingslay, in order to follow them in the wake until the end.
